A&O Shearman is a new type of legal industry leader. Formed via a merger of two leading UK and US firms in 2024, Allen & Overy and Shearman & Sterling, the firm is an unparalleled combination of truly global capabilities helping the world’s leading businesses to grow, innovate and thrive. In a fast-moving world, A&O Shearman continue to lead from the front. The firm work with companies, organisations and governments on their most complex legal issues to build strong client relationships. With offices across the world, apprentices and trainees are guaranteed to work on the most interesting, high-profile legal work. The most common entry is the paid summer and winter vacation schemes. Open to university students from all disciplines, they immerse students in how to excel at the highest level of law, tackling complex challenges and being part of a supportive firm. Built on the same principles, the apprenticeship programme offers an excellent alternative pathway to becoming a solicitor for those who prefer to enter the world of work rather than attend university. Defined by flexibility and choice, apprentices build a foundation to find their strengths and over a 6-year program, grow into exceptional lawyers. The programme is based on sixth-month rotations through leading practice areas. All apprentices gain exposure across as many parts of the firm as possible and experience hands-on learning and guidance from senior colleagues while also studying one day a week during years 1-4 at BPP University learning about the English Legal System. Each year offers a wide variety of experience with further opportunities for secondments in years 5 and 6. A&O Shearman has strong values and a commitment to sustainability, where individuals with different backgrounds belong and excel.
